Shillong, Dec 3: Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Bhagirath Choudhary on Tuesday said there is no proposal to upgrade the College of Agriculture in the state of Meghalaya to a University.
The minister informed that “For scientific research and to support agricultural development in the State of Meghalaya, the Government has established ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, Umiam; 07 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and 03 Colleges namely (i) College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences, Barapani (ii) College of Community Science, Tura (iii) College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai.”
Earlier, Choudhary informed that there are 3 Central Agricultural Universities, 4 Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)’s Deemed to be Universities, and 4 Central Universities with Agriculture faculty in which there is no proposal to upgrade existing Colleges of Agriculture to full-fledged Universities.
Since agriculture including agricultural education is a state subject, the State Government can upgrade or open new Agricultural University as per the requirement of the state for the purpose of agricultural education, research and extension, he stated.
