Dibrugarh, Nov 5: Several protesters were detained following a tense standoff at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) on Tuesday in Dibrugarh. The situation escalated when authorities used a JCB excavator to completely block access by shutting down a gate near the campus.
The protest centered on the permanent closure of the Alubari Gate, which provided access to the nearby Jalan Nagar Tea Estate. Authorities closed the gate to curb the rise in alcohol-related disturbances around the campus, including a fatal incident in July. The decision was aimed at reducing disruptions and maintaining peace on campus.
The action led to a heated confrontation, with injuries reported on both sides. To control the crowd, police deployed tear gas, while protesters retaliated by throwing glass bottles, bricks, and stones, adding to the chaos.
During the clashes, Additional SP Nirmal Ghosh was struck in the face, and several officers were injured by objects thrown by protesters. “Around 8-9 police personnel were injured in the stone and beer bottle pelting. A couple of journalists were also hit. I was also hit in the face, and my cellphone was damaged in the attack. The crowd has now been dispersed, and the situation is under control now,” Ghosh stated.
In July a youth was also killed in a drunken brawl in the Alubari area. The decision to close the gate was made to address these concerns and prevent further disturbances in the area.
