Tura, April 28: South West Garo Hills Police have registered two more cases in connection with the Chenga Benga Gang Rape and assault case, which took place on April 16 this month.
The incident has shocked the Garo Hills and the entire state. So far, nine accused have been arrested by police.
In an official release, South West Garo Hills SP Vikash Kumar stated that apart from the Ampati Women PS Case No. 09(04)2024 (U/S 376D/323/341/506/34 IPC R/W Section 5(g)/6 of POCSO Act), two more cases (Ampati PS Case No. 36(04)2024 u/s 392/323/506/34 IPC and Ampati PS Case No. 34(04)2024 u/s 341/395/384/506 IPC) have been registered against the accused.
He informed that it was revealed during the investigation that the criminals had snatched a mobile phone from one person and extorted money from another through threats. So, police have registered two more cases, and further investigation is ongoing.
He further informed that all the arrested accused hail from Teporpara village in Assam, near the crime scene. The arrests were made with assistance from the Salmara district police. Seven mobile phones seized from the accused are being analyzed meticulously.
The district police chief has also appealed to citizens to inform the local police if they have any information about the criminals involved, ensuring their identities will be kept secret.
