Tura, Aug 31: In a major treat for the Chess players and enthusiasts of Garo Hills, International Master Sagar Shah interacted gave invaluable tips and guidance at the One Day School Level Rapid Chess Tournament Cum Doctor Workshop at SMELC, Dakopgre on Thursday.

The event was organised by the Garo Hills Chess Association in collaboration with the West Garo Hills District Administration.

A total of 42 participants from different schools around the Garo Hills district were part of the workshop. The participants played the Swiss League tournament format which consists of a total of 7 rounds of 10 mins match and the winner of the tournament received trophies with certificates and cash prizes of Rs. 5000 for the 1st position, Rs. 3000 for the 2nd position, Rs. 2000 for the 3rd position, and an amount of Rs. 1000 each for the 4th, 5th and 6th position holders.

This is the maiden visit of Sagar Shah, the co-founder of Chessbase India, Indian chess player, commentator and a YouTuber, to Tura.

As part of his visit, Shah not only explored the innovative chess arena at DC Park, a visionary endeavour brought to life by Swapnil Tembe, Director of School Education & Literacy (DSEL), but also led a workshop engaging with fellow chess aficionados, fostering an enriching interaction that promised to inspire and educate. The event was also graced by K M Warjri, the president of Meghalaya Chess Association, Shillong.

The event displayed immense young talents and budding chess enthusiasts. Kids as young as 9 years old showed up to the tournament.

A major highlight of the event was Shah taking on 5 chess players in a simultaneous chess match. He defeating 4 of them except for only Silkam A. Sangma, one of the top chess players in Meghalaya who was able to draw with him.

In the tournament, in which 42 young chess enthusiasts participated, Arano Rikrim Ch Momin won the 1st position, 2nd place went to Ras Lal Upadhayaa and the 3rd place went to Nikman G Monin. The 4th, 5th and 6th position went to Cheaha Nikgame G Momin, Dennis G Momin and Amaziah Gapeasa Ch Marak, respectively. The prizes were handed over to the winners by Sagar Shah.

After the event, Tembe and Shah along with members of Garo Hills Chess Association and the president of Meghalaya Chess Association headed over to the Chess Arena at DC Park where they indulged themselves in a hearty match of chess and discussed about the future of chess in Garo Hills and also Meghalaya in general.

On speaking to Hub News, Sagar Shah said, ” I’m very happy to see how chess is shaping up here. I think it has all the elements for becoming a hub of chess. Tura can become a hub of chess.”
