TURA, Aug 17: On a day Garo Hills was celebrating the country’s 77th Independence Day, tragedy struck Mangsang village in East Garo Hills where a 6 years old boy drowned after falling into an abandoned water hole reportedly left unsealed by a road construction company.
The incident occurred during the late afternoon football match that was being played in the nearby Mangsang soccer field on August 15.
The 6 year old boy Berdinand N Areng and 12 year old Aisaritha Sangma, hailing from Mangsang Bamil village, were playing nearby when they became unaware of the lurking danger. A road construction company, alleged to be CCIL company, had left behind a deep pit after extracting boulders. The pit had been filled with rainwater at the time of the accident.
Villagers who were alerted to the accident rushed in and were able to quickly rescue 12 year old Aisaritha Sangma. But they could not locate Berdinand for several minutes. By the time they located him and managed to bring him to the surface he was no longer responsive and had succumbed to drowning.
