Itanagar, Jan 13: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein reviewed the 2,800 MW Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project on Sunday, emphasizing its potential to transform the state’s energy landscape and drive economic growth.
Mein highlighted the project’s role in harnessing the state’s vast hydropower resources, calling it “a model of what can be achieved through persistence and teamwork.”
He credited Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s leadership for reviving stalled power projects by partnering with Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) to ensure their accelerated development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project on March 9, 2024.
Located near Munli village in Lower Dibang Valley District, Arunachal Pradesh, Dibang is a 278-meter-high Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam, making it India’s highest concrete gravity dam and the highest RCC dam in the world.
It has a power generation capacity of 11,223 million units annually, connected to the Northern Grid. It has a reservoir capacity of 1,282.60 million cubic meters to mitigate flooding during the monsoon.
Chowna Mein also highlighted the socioeconomic benefits of the project, which include direct employment for 500 people during the construction phase and 300 during operation. Additionally, 12% of the generated power will be allocated to Arunachal Pradesh, with 1% dedicated to the Local Area Development Fund for the region’s progress.
The project is scheduled for commissioning by February 2032. It aims to integrate sustainable energy storage with flood moderation, contributing significantly to India’s net zero targets while enhancing the development prospects of Arunachal Pradesh.
“The contributions of local communities and the youth have been instrumental in advancing this project,” Mein added.
The Dibang project, once completed, is expected to bolster Arunachal Pradesh’s infrastructure and catalyze economic revival.
