Tura, April 2: The power of faith and prayer resonated across the Garo Hills today as thousands of Christians flocked the church to attend special Mass and prayers on the holy and solemn occasion of Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ on the cross at Mount Calvary over two thousand years ago.
Church services began late in the afternoon as people, a large number of them being young boys and girls, walking to church for the service and hear the reading from the holy Bible.
Priests in the Catholic church and reverend and pastors in the Baptist and protestant churches addressed church goers about the importance of Good Friday.
“Jesus Christ gave his life as the ultimate sacrifice to save us all. He died on the cross to save us from sin,” was the sermon across churches during Good Friday service as devotees gave prayers during worship.
In the Catholic churches, this solemn event was marked with the religious ceremony of ‘The 14 Stations of the Cross’ during which priests led the congregation in enacting the last journey of Christ as he carried the cross to Mount Calvery and his death on the cross.
Hymns were sung, prayers offered and special holy verses were read as each station was marked with the enactment.
Good Friday service was marked with the largest gathering of Christians across churches all over Garo Hills and the crowds swelled since this was the first Good Friday service to get observed since 2019.
Last year, the Covid pandemic resulted in the entire Holy Week, beginning from Palm Sunday and passing through Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday being under a total lockdown.
