Shillong, Dec 24: Christmas is primarily celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, who holds central significance in Christianity as the Son of God and the savior of humanity. According to Christian tradition, Jesus was born in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. The date chosen to celebrate Christmas, December 25th, was adopted by the early Christian Church.
Christmas is a time for Christians to rejoice and reflect on the teachings of Jesus, emphasising themes of love, peace, and goodwill. The nativity story, as told in the Bible, involves the Virgin Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the Three Wise Men, and the birth of Jesus in a stable.
While Christmas has its roots in religious observance, it has also evolved into a global cultural and secular celebration. People around the world, irrespective of their religious beliefs, often celebrate Christmas by exchanging gifts, sharing meals with loved ones, decorating homes, and participating in festive traditions that promote joy and togetherness.
Why is 25 December Christmas day on each year?
The first recorded celebration of Christmas in the Roman Church took place on December 25 in the year 336 AD. This historic event occurred during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine, who was a significant figure as the first Christian Roman Emperor. Constantine played a pivotal role in adopting Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire, marking a turning point in the history of the Christian faith.
The choice of December 25 as the date for Christmas coincided with existing pagan festivals like the winter solstice, making it easier for the new Christian celebrations to gain acceptance and replace older traditions.
