Shillong, Dec 19: Ah, Christmas—a time filled with cheer, goodwill, and the promise of love and joy. Yet, amidst the festive spirit, one cannot ignore the frustration that brews when confronted with a heavy traffic jam at Khyndailad (GS Road), threatening to dim the radiance of this beautiful and blessed season.
The bustling heart of Shillong city transforms into a whirlwind of activity during this merry time. Streets adorned with dazzling lights, shops adorned with festive decorations, and the air filled with the melody of carols paint a picturesque scene of holiday bliss. However, as joyful as this season is, the experience can take a hit when traffic sets in, testing one’s patience and, at times, dampening the Christmas spirit.
Everyone is rushing; everyone is so indisciplined. Two-wheeler’s overtaking—it’s the darker side of the city where Christmas doesn’t bring merriment. Shillong Traffic Police (STP), as they do during every festive occasion, should come up with strategic plans to solve the city’s traffic congestion.
The jam is heavily concentrated in the two pivotal areas—Khyndailad and Ïewduh. If there is congestion on these roads, the entire city is put to a halt. Travelling from Upper Shillong to Laitumkhrah consumes almost 3–4 hours; one could listen to an entire Christmas album and still not reach their destination. Sadly, upon arrival, an additional hour is wasted in search of a parking spot. “Christmas is always a good time,” sings Boney M, but regrettably, not here in Shillong.
The blame rests on both citizens and the traffic department—citizens should exhibit responsibility by adhering to traffic rules, while the traffic department ought to innovate and come up with strategies to prevent these avoidable traffic snarls. This is not a problem confined to this year alone; it has plagued the city for many years during the Christmas season.
Come what may, Christmas is still the most beautiful time of the year; the hours spent waiting will be worth it when you get that sweater, jacket, blazer, or pair of shoes you want to wear for the Christmas service. One should not allow the temporary setback of a traffic jam to eclipse the magic of Christmas. Let it serve as a reminder that the true joy of the season lies in our ability to find light even in the midst of congestion. Embrace the chaos, spread cheer, and let the spirit of Christmas shine through, making even the most tedious journeys a part of the cherished holiday memories.
