Shillong, Dec 14: Local festivals and events in Meghalaya are a great way to showcase the products of local entrepreneurs, who work tireless to create a unique brand and product that embodies the local culture and tradition and at the same time overcoming logistical challenges and increasing their self-life with modern technological interventions. One of the hidden gems of the state that was on display at the just concluded Winter Tales Festival 2024 in Shillong was the local wine brand ‘Chuchekra’, being one of the major attractions.
Tengnang D. Sangma, a resident of Ranikor, who was selling the wine at the festival, narrated the inspiring story of coordination and teamwork between the Garo Hills and Khasi Hills makers. “The wine is produced in Marakgre village, near Jengjal, West Garo Hills, and the packaging is done here before it reaches the market,” Sangma explained.
Sangma also highlighted the challenges faced by the team in bringing the wine to the market. “The expenditure of bringing the wine, along with packaging, from Garo Hills is quite high,” he said.
But what makes Chuchekra wine truly unique is its production process. According to Sangma, the wine is made from homemade rice, which is first converted into a cake. The cake is then soaked for years to give it a distinct flavor. “It’s a traditional method that’s been passed down through generations,” Sangma said.
The success of Chuchekra wine is a testament to the power of collaboration and teamwork between different communities in Meghalaya.
