Guwahati, May 6: The Assam Police CID has issued an urgent alert following a major online financial fraud targeting Progressive Fertichem Pvt. Ltd, an Assam-based company.
On May 4, 2025, the company’s accountant received a WhatsApp message from mobile number +91 84385 48257, impersonating the company’s Managing Director (MD). The fraudster used the MD’s photo as the profile picture, making the message appear legitimate. Trusting the request, the accountant transferred ₹96 lakhs to an IndusInd Bank account as instructed.
The real MD discovered the fraud soon after and immediately alerted the cybercrime helpline 1930 and the CID headquarters in Assam.
Police and banking authorities have launched an investigation. So far, over ₹89 lakhs have been successfully frozen in the bank.
Officials noted that similar tactics have been used in recent cases, including one in Tezpur, where large sums were routed through betting websites.
“We urge all citizens and businesses to stay alert. Do not trust financial instructions received via WhatsApp or other messaging apps—even if the sender uses a known name or photo,” the public advisory stated.
It added: “Always verify by calling the person directly before taking any action. Never transfer money based on messages alone. Report any suspected fraud immediately by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in. Cyber frauds are on the rise—vigilance is your best protection.”
