Guwahati, March 12: A CID probe into a police encounter in Assam’s Udalguri district has confirmed that the victim was not a suspected dacoit, but was actually a small-time farmer named Dimbeswar Muchahary.
The incident took place on February 24 in Dhansirikhuti village under Rowta area, where two policemen were also allegedly injured in a shootout.
Initially, the victim’s body was handed over to the mother of the suspected dacoit, Kenaram Boro alias Kenaram Basumatary, who had identified it as her son. However, after the final rites were conducted and the body was buried, Muchahary’s family claimed that it was their son.
The Chief Minister of Assam ordered a CID probe after a police complaint was filed regarding the mistaken identity, following which the body was exhumed and a DNA analysis was conducted.
The probe found that Muchahary was not a criminal, as the police had claimed, but was actually a small-time farmer.
