GANGTOK, Feb 15: Citizens Action Party (CAP) Sikkim staged a protest rally on Thursday from Gangtok’s Amdo Golai to the District Administration Centre against the sale of the state government’s stake in Teesta Urja Private Limited to Greenco.
The state government’s share in the hydroelectricity plant was 60.4 percent, which has now been sold to a private company.
During the protest, CAP Sikkim asserted that no public consultation or confidence was sought before selling the stake. CAP spokesperson Albert Gurung stated, “The SKM government has not created any assets for the future generation of Sikkim. They have only blamed the previous government for corruption in the HEP. The GLOF that occurred on October 3 took many lives and destroyed properties worth over 100 Crores Rupees.”
Gurung targeted the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang, which was destroyed in the GLOF, and further said, “The Chief Minister claimed that the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang was substandard. He also claimed to have initiated an investigation through the Central Bureau of Investigation concerning the dam construction. However, no investigation has been carried out, nor has the State vigilance conducted an investigation. Without any investigation, SKM has cleverly sold the stakes to the Mauritius-based company Greenco, which would welcome more dams to Sikkim.”
CAP further stated that the carrying capacity of the Teesta river to hold dams has reached its peak. “It is a grave injustice to the people of Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung, as well as to the thousands of people whose lives have been hampered by the GLOF.”
