Guwahati, February 14: Climate Change Summit themed ” A Call to Future” was held at the NEDFi House Auditorium in Guwahati on Wednesday. The summit was organized by NE Focus.
Climate change is a longstanding phenomenon, that has evolved through the ages. “However, when there is chaos, there will be order” with this thought-provoking perspective on climate Dr. Arup Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Assam Pollution Control Board, inaugurated the summit.
The summit brought together experts and environmental advocates to address the urgent climate challenges.
Dr. Mishra, an environmental expert, spoke about society’s current lack of genuine awareness surrounding climate change and pollution. He pointed out that while many express concern over large-scale climate issues, they often overlook the pollution caused by everyday household waste.

Explaining climate change as a natural occurrence throughout history, Dr. Mishra referenced religious texts, suggesting that tales of great floods could be seen as metaphors for past climate events. He emphasized that today’s climate crisis, however, is predominantly man-made and urged attendees to pay attention to the finer details of human activities that endanger the planet.
Sangeeta Saikia, Editor of NE Focus, welcomed all participants and highlighted the summit’s goal of raising awareness and sparking discussions about environmental challenges and public health risks.
The summit featured contributions from several experts, including Jayanta Pathak, Head of the Environmental Education and Capacity Building Division of NGO Aaranyak; Dr. Simanta Kalita, CEO of Atal Incubation Center; Rizwan Uz Zaman, Senior Consultant of Assam Climate Change Management; Dr. Nivedita Guru, a scientist from the Rainforest Research Institute in Jorhat; and Dr. Ritusmita Goswami, Assistant Professor at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

The event hosted key panel discussions, including on “Infrastructure Development and Environmental Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities for Northeast India.”
The summit, was attended by students from several prominent colleges in Guwahati, debates and discussions on sustainable development and climate resilience, particularly for the Northeast region was also a part of the programme.
