Tura, Dec 5: In a bid to promote cleanliness through artistic expression, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma virtually launched the “Paint My City” 2024 campaign for Tura on Thursday.

The initiative, organized by the District Planning Office, West Garo Hills, aims to transform Tura into a vibrant and aesthetically pleasing town through community participation. The launch event took place at the District Auditorium, Tura, in the presence of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma and other dignitaries.

The “Paint My City” campaign focuses on engaging the community to beautify Tura through street art, graffiti, murals, and enhanced cleanliness. The initiative encourages local youth and artists to adorn public spaces, including government offices, with culturally significant artwork.

Chief Minister Sangma emphasized that the campaign is a step toward addressing issues such as garbage, unpainted walls, and incomplete constructions that mar the city’s appearance.

“The campaign aims to create a sense of satisfaction and pride among participants by seeing the long-term impact of their efforts,” he informed.

He also explained that the idea behind the campaign is to encourage citizens to paint their city, including government offices, central, state, and district councils, thereby having a city where every boundary board, house, and building is painted, creating a cohesive and attractive appearance. “And the chief goal is to expand this into a large-scale program that involves the entire community,” said.

Speaking at the event, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma encouraged the active participation of Tura residents. He invited young artists to contribute their talents to create a visually appealing city, emphasizing that the campaign is a collective effort for the community’s benefit.

Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani outlined the broader goals of the campaign, which include cleaning up city walls and streets while fostering local talent. “The aim is to make Tura one of the most beautiful cities in the state, if not the country,” he stated, urging citizens to take ownership of the initiative and work together for a better future.

To kickstart the campaign, a token amount of Rs. 50,000 and a paint bucket were distributed to development committees. These resources will support the initial phase of beautification efforts across the city.
