SHILLONG, JUL 4: With the demand for the inclusion of the two major languages of the State – Khasi and Garo in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution remains high, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said the legislative members along with the Speaker are in favour of its introduction in the State Assembly.
Members in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly should be allowed to speak and debate in Khasi and Garo language in the House. A step towards promoting our languages.

While answering to a question here on Monday, the CM said that in the ongoing discussion among the leaders and the Speaker of the House a strong opinion has been created by all the members that the two languages should be allowed along with a translation while putting up a Motion, different Resolutions, the Debates and the Budget, but leaving out the Question Hour.
“We feel strongly that this is something that should be done and efforts are being made and hope that we are able to move this very soon”, said the chief minister.
The CM informed that the process of introducing the two languages on the floor of the house is moving forward with members having taken the issue seriously.
The chief minister also pointed out that the inclusion is a Legislative matter and will depend on the Assembly Secretariat even as he expressed optimism that a positive response would be given for the two major languages of the State.
