Shillong, Feb 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, accompanied by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Thursday inspected the MUDA Shopping Complex, also known as Ïew Laitumkhrah, to review the progress of its redevelopment.
The market, which was reduced to ashes in a devastating fire in 2022, is now nearing completion.
During the inspection, vendors expressed their joy at seeing the reconstruction take shape, with the project now 60% complete. The market is expected to become one of the Shillong’s best community markets once fully operational.
Expressing her satisfaction with the progress, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “Honorable Chief Minister, along with me, inspected the ongoing redevelopment of Laitumkhrah Market to review the ongoing works at the site.”
She further informed that the project is scheduled to complete its second phase by March 2026. Once finished, the market will accommodate around 500 vendors engaged in various trades, including wet and dry merchandise, grocery stores, and multiple departmental facilities.
“The market will also accommodate a food court with adequate spaces for showcasing local and international food and beverages, alongside art and musical shows. There are plans to include modern components such as an abattoir and an incinerator to ensure hygiene and proper waste management,” she added.
The market will incorporate adequate parking spaces and leisure sitting areas for visitors. The entire redevelopment project is spread across three phases until its final completion.
It may be recalled that in the early hours of October 28, 2022, a massive fire engulfed Laitumkhrah Market, gutting 84 stalls. According to police assessments, the estimated damage was approximately ₹1 crore.
