Shillong, July 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday recalled his days as an entrepreneur and said back in those days there wasn’t an ecosystem to encourage entrepreneurs.

Addressing the Impact Week 2024 held at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), Sangma recalling his foray as an entrepreneur said when he entered politics and was in the government he had some clear goals.

“When we came to form the government, I was very clear in my mind that we will create an ecosystem for entrepreneurs, which I did not have in my times,” Sangma said.

He highlighted some of the programs of the state government for entrepreneurs like Prime Meghalaya, CM Elevate, Chief Minister’s E Championship etc. and urged the gathering to take advantage of these programs.

“You have shown a great level of confidence and the way to approach problems in agriculture, tourism, waste management, transport and communication. It is important to diagnose problems and provide solutions. This is crucial for an entrepreneur”, Sangma said on students’ presentations during the event.

Emphasising the importance of turning problems into opportunities, Sangma said, an entrepreneur steps in to provide solutions to problems which are practical and feasible and also financially viable.

The Impact Week was held by Prime Meghalaya in collaboration with MLCU to encourage students to become entrepreneurs. Prime Meghalaya has funded and supported 15 academic institutions across the state for conducting entrepreneurship development programs for promising entrepreneurs and start-ups.

Impact Week 2024 is a 14-day programme, with a three days ‘train-the-coach’ phase, where selected faculty members from 15 institutions across the state undergo intensive training from experienced senior coaches.

Following this, is the design thinking challenge phase, where the newly trained coaches lead students from across the 15 institutions to tackle real-world challenges in sectors like unemployment, waste management, transportation, sustainable tourism and agriculture.

The program aims to equip participants with essential skills in innovation, customer focus, implementation, fostering sustainable growth and community engagement.

Successful participants get the opportunity to scale their solutions through incubation by Prime Hub.
