Shillong, June 1: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday reviewed the COVID-19 situation with officials of the five districts of Garo Hills in presence of Deputy Speaker, Timothy D. Shira and a host of other legislators from the region.

The Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and District Medical and Health Officers from across Garo Hills gave an overview of the ongoing pandemic and the necessary arrangements, which has been taken up at the district level to combat the disease. Across all districts of Garo Hills, adequate infrastructural facilities have been provided and works for setting up of additional infrastructure to deal with the pandemic are being put in place.
The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretary Health Sampath Kumar and Joint Secretary Health Ram Kumar.
The duo briefed the Chief Minister on the trend of COVID cases and recoveries in Garo Hills and informed the Chief Minister on the ongoing works for upscaling of medical infrastructure in the region.
Need for awareness on COVID vaccine
The meeting stressed on the need to sensitize the public particularly the rural population to go for vaccination, as many in remote locations in the age group of 45 plus are yet to go forward for their vaccination.
The meeting also discussed about resuming the slot for vaccination of 18 plus which will be made operational as and when the stocks are received by the State, for which the Chief Minister indicated that the same will be made available by the end of this month.
Spotlight on development of West Garo Hills
The Chief Minister on Tuesday held a review meeting with officials of various line departments on Tura beautification project, Tura Medical College, ongoing construction of tourism and sporting amenities in West Garo Hills. He has directed the concerned authorities to expedite the works in a time-bound manner.

The Chief Minister has also asked the district administration to start preparation for the 50th year of Statehood. He said that citizens of Tura should be encouraged to renovate their boundary walls, houses by painting, cleaning of localities, rivers, streams, etc. and to organize painting competitions. He also suggested street lighting and mechanized cleaning of Tura to the officials of Tura Municipal Board.
In his visit to the district, the Chief Minister inspected the Jengjal Cryogenic Oxygen Plant to oversee the construction of the approach road to the Plant. He also paid a visit to the COVID War Room in Tura and handed over 2 ambulances and oxygen concentrators to the District Administration.
