Shillong, Nov 27: Reiterating their demand for the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) and oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (CoMSO) organised black flag protests across the state on Friday.

Black flags and posters reading ‘We want ILP, No ILP No Rest’, ‘Yes ILP, No CAA’, ‘Amit Shah and Modi – We need ILP’ were put up around the Shillong City, including on local taxis and public transport vehicles.

Vice president of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) and member of CoMSO, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said the Black flag protest is to remind the people of the long-pending demand for ILP.

Irked at the lackadaisical attitude of the Centre in relation to the implementation of ILP, he said, “ILP is important for the state of Meghalaya”. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be convinced that ILP is a mechanism to tackle influx given the situation that the tribals are a minority community.

Kharlyngdoh said the CoMSO will sit and discuss on the next course of action to intensify the demand for ILP.

“60 MLAs go to Delhi, demand for ILP”, “No ILP, no rest, save Hynniewtrep implement ILP and MRSSA, Withdraw CAA”. Shops in Khyndai Lad and GS road up to Motphran point were closed. Cars – both private and local also displayed black flags.

It may be mentioned that the protest also saw support from the NGOs from Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills.
