Conference on implementation of NEP in colleges of Garo Hills held at Don Bosco College, Tura

Tura, April 6: A one day conference for principals and NEP/IQAC Co-ordinatotrs of NEHU Affiiated Garo Hills colleges was organised by the Internal Quality assurance cell of Don Bosco College, Tura and North East Hill University Shillong with the theme “Higher Education in Meghalaya and implementation of NEP in the colleges of Garo Hills”.

The program was held in Don Bosco College of teacher Education Hall and was attended by the Principal,NEP/IQAC members from Colleges of all over Garo hills.

The program started with a welcome song “We are Unity” sang by the students of DBC College.Fr. Bivan’s felicitated the resource persons and the Principals of College.

Addressing the participants Dr. Binu Mathew, Associate Professor and Chairman of the College welfare advisory community, NEHU Tura said “ to implement NEP successfully, there are some points we need to address collaborative effort innovative solution and sustainable commitment.The 5+3+3+4 will strengthen the student from the basic level. Classes 6-8 will have Coding Vocational course along with the Indian Language, Classes 9-12 will not have Board exams and will also include 2 Foreign Language. The next stage will be directly Graduation. Graduate will also be divided by Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Degree. And then that Graduate can do Graduate Research (PG) and then PHD.For students there won’t be Boards Exams, instead semester exams will be conducted, which means its a self assessment. This self assessments will be helping in identifying themselves of what they are capable of and which way to go forward. As for teachers there will be Teachers Assessment system in place.This System is accepted worldwide as NEP is already implemented in the top 50 Universtes of the world, the implementation can open new avenues for students.”

He also added “ the way forward is to re-design the syllabus accordingly, bring a revolution, change in teaching learning and Industrial tie-ups with Universities.”

Prof. Sumarbin Umdor, Controller of Exams(CoE), NEHU, spoke on the importance of higher education, how Higher education can change the inner abilities of a person. It can contribute in new ideas and provide knowledge and transforms society.

The day long program included Presentation and Discussion among the principal’s and college representatives of Higher education on, Issues and challenges of Implementation of NEP in Garo Hills Region.
