Guwahati, Jan 29: The Congress launched a blistering attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, accusing him of presiding over an illegal coal syndicate in defiance of Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on January 29, All India Congress Committee (AICC) national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate criticized the Chief Minister for his “double standards” on illegal rat-hole mining.
“The Chief Minister initially denied the existence of illegal coal mining in Assam. Yet, within 48 hours, he directed authorities to shut down all such sites,” Shrinate remarked.
She referenced the coal mine tragedy in Umrangso, where four workers perished in an illegal rat-hole mine, alleging that Sarma’s administration had failed to curb rampant illegal mining despite the NGT’s ban.
Describing Sarma as “one of the most corrupt Chief Ministers in the country,” Shrinate accused the state government of widespread misgovernance.
“He makes grand claims, stirs false pride, and blames Congress while parading BJP’s so-called success. But the ground reality tells a different story,” she asserted.
Highlighting the aftermath of the Umrangso tragedy, she alleged that after initially denying illegal mining, Sarma reversed course by ordering a shutdown within 24 hours.
“Everyone knows about the 5,000 workers from Umrangso now operating in Goalpara, Dhubri, Morigaon, and Barpeta. Where did they come from?” Shrinate questioned, urging accountability for what she described as “systemic negligence.”
