GUWAHATI, March 27: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has claimed that Assam is witnessing an undeclared state of emergency under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government.
Speaking at a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday, AICC secretary and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in-charge Manoj Chauhan accused the Chief Minister of suppressing fundamental rights, targeting opposition leaders, and using police force to silence dissent, including journalists and MPs.
Chauhan alleged that Sarma has been pressuring all political parties and trampling upon democratic values in his pursuit of power.
“The people of Assam will remove this government in the 2026 elections,” Chauhan asserted. He further referenced a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Grok, an AI platform, which allegedly labelled Sarma as the most corrupt Chief Minister in India. Challenging Sarma, Chauhan said, “If he has the courage, let him block the X-handle in India and take legal action against Elon Musk.”
The Congress leader accused the Chief Minister of shielding BJP leaders while harassing opposition figures. He pointed out that no action was taken against a BJP MLA in the Assam Assembly who allegedly attempted to attack an opposition MLA. Meanwhile, he claimed that Sarma has been running a smear campaign against Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Gaurav Gogoi and his wife.
Chauhan further alleged that attacks on opposition leaders and their supporters have increased under the current regime stating that MP Rakibul Hussain was allegedly targeted in an attempted murder case and Congress workers in Gogonukh were reportedly assaulted by goons. Journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumdar of The Cross Current was “conspiratorially arrested” to suppress opposition voices.
Chauhan reiterated that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had previously labelled Himanta Biswa Sarma as the most corrupt CM in India. “Today, that claim stands proven,” he said, alleging that the BJP’s ambition of securing 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and amending the Constitution was disrupted by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
Chauhan also accused the state government of manipulating crime statistics by instructing police stations not to register cases. However, he pointed out that data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals Assam as one of the worst states in the country for violence against women.
Furthermore, he claimed that six foreign countries, including the United States, Australia, and Canada, have issued travel advisories for Assam due to concerns over the state’s law and order situation. This information, he said, was submitted in the Assam Assembly by a cabinet minister.
The press conference was also attended by APCC Media Department Chairman Bedbrat Bora and Guwahati Metro District Congress President Gopal Sharma. Congress leaders reiterated their commitment to taking the fight to the people and resisting what they described as the systematic erosion of democracy in Assam.
