“Congress fight in Garo Hills will be with NPP, TMC not in picture”

TURA Oct 31: The Congress has come to the conclusion that the upcoming high voltage political battle to win the hearts of the voters in Garo Hills will be a contest with the ruling NPP headed by Conrad K Sangma, while the highly publicised show currently being projected by the All India Triinamool Congress led by Mukul Sangma will be a non entity in the electoral battle.

Speaking to Hub News by working president of MPCC Deborah Marak from New Delhi where she along with Vincent Pala and Wansuk Syiem attended a meeting with new AICC president Mallikarjun Khagre, she said that the fight for supremacy will be almost entirely with the NPP.

“It is not the TMC (AITC) but the ruling NPP which will be our main rival in next year’s elections, there is no doubt about that,” strongly believes Deborah Marak.

She indicated that ground assessment by the Congress has been projecting a direct clash between the two major parties in most constituencies of Garo Hills.

“We are undeterred by the NPP challenge because Garo Hills has always been a stronghold of the Congress. There is a swell of support from voters in Garo Hills for the Congress and we will be paying attention to it,” she says.

Deborah revealed that the top leadership of the Congress will be focusing on the northeast and Meghalaya for the upcoming polls.

“Our party leadership is right now engaged in the high voltage election campaigning for Himachal Pradesh which goes to vote next month. Once it gets over, attention will be on this side,” assures Deborah Marak.

According to the former minister, a poll strategy is being worked out for the coming elections to Meghalaya and the state leaders will also be calling on party supremo Sonia Gandhi for her insight on the political scenario involving Meghalaya.

The two day high level meeting between Pala and Deborah with Khagre concluded in Delhi on Sunday afternoon, it was informed.
