Agartala, July 19: Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi has called for the intervention of Tripura Governor in the ongoing violence related to Panchayat polls in the state.

Gogoi and former Union minister, Tariq Anwar, along with other senior leaders, met Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu to discuss the ongoing violence related to the Panchayat elections in the state.

Gaurav Gogoi expressed the Congress party’s concern, stating they do not want ethnic violence similar to that in Manipur to erupt in Tripura. The party advocates for equal justice for everyone and all communities.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi emphasized that the Congress seeks justice for the youths who were killed and for those whose houses, shops, and properties were either burnt down or damaged in the recent ethnic violence in Ganda Twisa, Tripura.

“Our party leaders in Tripura have repeatedly informed the police about the violence in Ganda Twisa and incidents related to the upcoming Panchayat elections, but the government has not taken any steps against the perpetrators,” he said.

Gogoi added, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi often says that India is a model of democracy. We, therefore, urged the government to ensure that Tripura adheres to this democratic model. The state should not be excluded from democratic principles.”

He also demanded the Governor’s intervention, saying, “Our party candidates are not being allowed to submit nominations in many constituencies, which raises concerns about voters being able to reach polling booths on August 8. We plan to submit a detailed memorandum to the Governor on Friday.”

Officials reported that over 40 houses, 30 shops, and many vehicles were either burnt or severely damaged by attackers in Ganda Twisa, located 130 km southeast of Agartala.

More than 300 villagers have taken shelter in special camps following the violence. The Tripura government has announced Rs 1.60 crore in compensation for the 166 affected families.
