Guwahati, Feb 14: Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on Wednesday resigned from the post of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Working President with immediate effect.
In a letter addressed to the APCC President, he stated that he will continue to work only as a primary member of the Congress party.
Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das met and felicitated Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday. Both of them have extended support to the BJP in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha was elected as MLA of Karimganj North Legislative Assembly constituency for the first time in 2011, defeating the four-time BJP MLA Mission Ranjan Das.
Purkayastha started his political journey with NSUI, the student wing of the Congress party.
Talking to media persons, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha said, “Yes, I have received an offer from the Chief Minister and I have accepted his proposal.”
It is not clear whether Purkayastha will directly join the saffron camp or will support the BJP-led government inside and outside the assembly.
