Shillong May 29: Meghalaya Congress has asked the state government to quickly improve the health facilities at the District hospitals, CHCs and PHCs across the state as many COVID patients from other districts are being referred to the hospitals in Shillong due to the poor health infrastructure in their respective districts, especially those adjoining the East Khasi Hills District.
In an online Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held under the chairmanship of Dr Mukul Sangma on Saturday, Congress legislators observed that the poor infrastructure in the district hospitals, CHCs and PHCs in the adjoining district headquarters is resulting in many COVID patients being referred to Shillong, thus putting a pressure on the availability of beds in the hospitals in the city.
The CLP demanded the government to not only scale-up the health care facilities in other districts but also ensure availability of manpower for both COVID and non-COVID patients.
The party has also decided to inspect the Corona Care Centres and the Health facility centres in every district from next week onwards to assess the facilities as well as their deficiencies.
At the same time, the CLP noted that the Community isolation centres set up by various Dorbar Shnongs in their respective localities are receiving positive responses and many patients are in the process of being isolated from their families. In order to aid these efforts at community level, the CLP urged the government to support these Centres with financial assistances for logistics.
Meghalaya Congress unhappy with ex-gratia amount to COVID victims
The Meghalaya Congress has also expressed its disappointment over government’s decision to provide ex-gratia of Rs. 50,000 to the families of people dying from COVID-19.
Congress legislators felt that since the corona pandemic has already been declared as a National Disaster, the state Government should treat every COVID death as part of the disaster and, hence, provide the ex- gratia as per the provision of the law duly notified under the National Disaster Management Act.
