Shillong, Sept 5: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said the government is setting up a district level committee to look into the drug issue and implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016.
“We are coming up with a committee at the district level starting with Shillong, Tura and Jowai, which will look into these aspects including aspects of drugs, rehabilitation and other aspects because this is a menace we all have to work together to fight,” Conrad told reporters.
He was reacting to the recent allegations made by opposition political parties that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is using illegal money from drugs, coal and contract works to poach MLAs of other political parties. TMC leader and former chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma had threatened to write to the Prime Minister for his intervention and necessary action on the matter.
Stating that the allegations were totally baseless, the CM said, “…it is very unfortunate that such leaders at that stature would stoop down to that kind of a level and make such allegations against other leaders. It is very unfortunate.”
“In fact, we have just notified a committee that will be headed by ADCs of different districts including Shillong where we will have members from different localities, are also part of it, headmen and development committees and so on and so forth – and the mandate will be not just to look at the drugs issue within localities but also monitor the implementation of the MRSSA and also look into aspects of cleanliness in particular locality and also water related issues,” he said.
“One can made any allegations and it is very unfortunate that responsible leaders at that level could make such statements without any basis or any kind of facts is something which is really unfortunate and a strong allegation like that that individuals are involved in drugs, which as I said not just completely wrong in terms of the society but it is anti-national in the entirety and the kind of effect and impact it has,” Conrad said while adding “the amount of work that we have done to ensure that we are curtailing and we are ensuring that we are able to capture, pick up people and stop the entire flow of drugs a lot of efforts have gone in and you have seen in the last three years, the amount of work that has been put in by the government to control this entire scenario.”
