Shillong, March 6: Meghalaya Chief Minister designate Conrad K. Sangma on Monday announced the plan to shift the Meghalaya Secretariat to a new building in the outskirts of Shillong, and also revealed major plans to curb traffic congestion in Shillong city.
Speaking at a press conference, Conrad said the new building would be constructed at Mawpat area, and bridges will be built from Barik point to de-congest Shillong’s traffic.
“We have identified the location in the past and the process of doing the master plan for that has already started. We expect that within few months we should be able to come to a final design and all those aspects,” he said.
“So, I do expect that in these 5 years we will see a major de-congestion of Shillong in terms of the administration going out to Mawpat area; so that is the area we expect for secretariat to come up. We are doing the final planning,” he added.
In addition to the announcement of the new secretariat building, Conrad also outlined plans to curb traffic congestion in the city. He revealed that the government is planning to introduce a range of measures and the construction of new bridge facilities.
“Shillong is very congested and most of the time we don’t get the space to put up two-three pillars to get elevated roads done. So those challenges are there but let’s hope that we are able to take forward the plans we had earlier to create parking lots. There are already a lot of parking lots in the smart city plan which are already there and the ball is rolling in that aspect. We will create more parking lots, we are going to go into the sky walks which I had decided earlier also but we couldn’t go ahead with that. In fact, one is already in the master plan being done for it, so you will see very soon, hopefully within this year itself we will complete the first skywalk itself which is one which is gonna be from Barik point. And the entire PWD complex to Police Bazar, so it’s gonna be an elevated footpath and in a very modern design,” informed the CM designate.
He added that the government is committed to improving the overall infrastructure and transportation system in Shillong, to decongest the city.
