Conrad continues to assess damages in Garo Hills, assures all help

Shillong, Oct 9: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has continued his tour of Garo Hills to assess the damage caused by landslides and floods due to unprecedented rainfall.

As part of his tour, Sangma visited South Garo Hills district on Wednesday and visited a number of places in the district to see for himself the damage.

The Chief Minister visited Chokpot and inspected the damages in Mount Carmel School caused by the floods. The school property like books, furniture and classrooms were damaged due to the flood. The school administration has sought support from the government to which Sangma said he would look into the request.

Sangma also inspected the damaged Reni Badimagre to Bibragre suspension bridge over Dareng River under Chokpot subdivision in the district. Sangma has directed the concerned authorities to immediately repair the bridge.

He has asked all damaged wooden bridges in the Garo Hills region to be immediately replaced with concrete or Bailey bridges. A large number of these wooden bridges have been damaged or swept away due to the flood.

Sangma on Tuesday visited much of the landslide and flood ravaged areas of West Garo Hills. He met several people, including those who lost their family members, and handed them ex-gratia payment and consoled them.

He had also met some of the residents in West Garo Hills who are waiting for relief. Sangma has assured them that the government would be doing all it can to tide over the crisis in these difficult moments.
