Addressing the occasion, CM Sangma said, “Today marks a significant event for our region as we inaugurate crucial developmental projects. The introduction of the largest substation in our area is a game-changer. In the past, despite having electricity, we faced issues of low voltage. With the inauguration of this new substation, our area will now receive voltage on par with other regions. This is a positive step towards ensuring consistent and improved electricity for our community.”
In his speech, Abu Taher Mondal highlighted the strategic importance of the new substation, stating, “With the inauguration of the Substation, we are poised to meet the rising energy demands of West Garo Hills efficiently and sustainably. This stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to transforming the power landscape of the region.”
Under the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP), with financial assistance from the World Bank, the project at West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, is a key component. The inauguration of the Phulbari Substation is expected to resolve long-pending issues of low voltage in the region, contributing to the rapid economic growth of the area.
The cost breakdown for various packages under NERPSIP in Phulbari includes Rs. 73.55 crores for the construction of a 132 KV Double Circuit Transmission Line, construction of 132/33 KV sub-stations, and Bay extension, including the construction of residential staff quarters. Additionally, Rs 33.34 Crores were spent on the construction of new 33/11 KV sub-stations, augmentation of existing sub-stations, and the construction of 33 KV lines.
A new power line connecting Ampati to Phulbari, stretching nearly 50 km, now delivers electricity at a higher level of 132 KV. It taps power from the Ampati station and channels it to the freshly built Phulbari station. This upgraded station, equipped with two powerful 50 MVA Transformers, links to smaller substations at 33/11 KV, benefiting communities in Bhaitbari, Phulbari, Tikrikilla, Raksamgre, Rongsai, Rajaballa, covering almost 75% of West Garo Hills District.
The inauguration of the Substation not only signifies a technological achievement but also underscores MPTCL’s dedication to empowering communities through sustainable and accessible electricity. The state government remains at the forefront of pioneering initiatives that contribute to the growth and prosperity of Meghalaya.
On the same day, the foundation stone for the construction of Indoor Stadium at J.P. Higher Secondary School, Bholarbhita, West Garo Hills was also laid.
