Conrad inaugurates Rural Market Complex at Sohiong, announces sports stadium for the area

Shillong, Mar 31: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the Rural Market Complex at Sohiong in the presence of C & RD Minister, Hamletson Dohling. Also present during the inauguration were Sohiong MLA Samlin Malngiang and Sohra MLA Gavin M Mylliem.


Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister expressed happiness at the inauguration of the Rural Market that will greatly benefit the farmers and said that the government has always endeavoured to extend support and assistance to the farmers so that they can get better prices by adding value to their products and by having better access to markets to sell their products.

“The government has through its various programmes tried to provide assistance to the numerous challenges of the farmers,” he said. He further urged the Hima Sohiong, the farmers and the villagers of the Sohiong to utilize the Rural Market in the best possible way for the benefit of the farmers and the village of Sohiong in general.

The construction of the Sohiong Rural Market Complex was funded by NEC and BASIN amounting to Rs 12.9 cr. The complex has 112 stalls with facilities for Cold storage and Parking. It will cover about 200 villages from Hima Sohiong, Nongspung, Nongkhlaw, Mylliem and Mawphlang.

Announcements for Sohiong area

The Chief Minister also announced that a Waste Collection Vehicle would be funded under the CMSDF for the area. “Whatever necessary support that is required to have a proper waste disposal system will be extended by the government and funds will be provided under the Swach Bharat Mission for waste disposal,” he said.

He also added that Sohiong area is producing many promising sportspersons and has a huge potential in Sports, therefore, a Sports stadium would be constructed in Sohiong. He also informed that an amount of Rs. 3 crore is earmarked for improving the block infrastructure in Sohiong.


The Chief Minister also distributed Rs 47.75 lakh to 73 producer groups under the FOCUS programme during the event.
