SHILLONG, Aug 4: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on Thursday hinted that there will be no independent probe into the recent arrest of a BJP state vice president Bernard N Marak, who was charged with running a brothel at his private farm house.
This came after the state BJP had recently staged a peaceful protest demanding an independent probe into the entire incident.
When sought for his reaction, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters that investigations are going on into the case.
“As investigations are going on the cases and the facts are coming out, I don’t think there is any reason for any kind of independent probe as such,” he maintained.
On July 22, West Garo Hills police had busted a sex racket at the private farm house of Marak, who is also the sitting Tura MDC, which led to the arrest of 73 persons and rescuing of 5 children.
Later, medical report also stated that one of the five children had been sexually assaulted.
Meanwhile, Marak is still under police custody after he was brought back to Tura from Uttar Pradesh.
Smart Meters
On the demand for instituting an inquiry into the implementation of the smart meters in the state, Sangma said that the government had already set up an inquiry commission and the same had also submitted its report into the alleged irregularities in the power sector.
“The inquiry has come out with a report saying that nothing of that sort is there. I mean if people want another inquiry then you know how long this will go on even after the inquiry and reports coming out,” he said.
“If they have any concerns they can always come and discuss with the government, they can discuss with the deputy CM we have no problem in that but as I said inquiry report has come out and a commission has been put in and after the inquiry has been given it has stated that no such areas of concern or no such whatever concern you mentioned are there in the inquiry – the report is very clear,” he added.
