Shillong, July 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma has condoled the death of Fr Stan Swamy, a Jesuit priest who worked for the cause of tribal rights and the rights of the marginalised in Jharkhand.
Father Stan Swamy, 84, breathed his last around 1.30 PM at Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai’s Bandra on Monday.
He had been languishing in the Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai for the last nine months after his arrest in the Elgaar Parishad case in October 2020.
Condoling the death of Fr. Stan Swamy, Sangma wrote on his twitter handle: “Rest in peace Fr. Stan”.

Member of Parliament from Shillong, Vincent H. Pala also expressed his condolences through his twitter handle. He wrote: “My family and I express our deepest condolences to the family members, friends, lawyers and all those who stood by Father Stan Swamy a Jesuit priest who dedicated his life for the tribals and voiceless. May his Soul Rest In Peace.”
Meanwhile, condoling the death of Fr. Stan Swamy, Shillong based Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) heavily criticized the BJP-led NDA government for false arrest and imprisonment of Fr. Stan as part of nationwide arrests of activists and intellectuals for a so called Bhima-Koregaon conspiracy, which exposes the authoritarian nature of disposition at the Centre.
