Conrad promises action on complaints of substandard NH 6 repairs

Must read

Shillong, March 13: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has promised strict action against poor construction work if formal complaints are submitted. “If there are any concerns and complaints brought to our notice in writing, we will definitely take action,” he said while addressing the media.

His statement came after Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) called for an independent quality audit of the repair work on National Highway 6 (NH 6). Syngkon, in a letter to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, highlighted serious problems in road construction standards. He described NH-6 as a vital route for trade, commerce, and tourism in the Northeast and expressed worries about its worsening condition. He also mentioned that during an inspection at Kuliang village in East Jaintia Hills, the new pavement was found to be so poorly made that the tar could be removed by hand.

In response to these concerns, Sangma acknowledged the challenge of monitoring numerous projects across the state but stressed the need for public vigilance.

“There are thousands of projects underway across the state by both Central and state governments. Sometimes, we cannot keep an eye on every construction work, so public support is required. It’s important that as a government, we act whenever we receive complaints. I assure the people that wherever we find issues, no matter who is involved, and when we get a complaint in writing, I will personally ensure action from the department and the government,” the Chief Minister stated.
