Mawkyrwat, Feb 14: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National President of the National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K. Sangma, on February 13, campaigned in several villages under the Mawkyrwat constituency to drum up support for party nominee and sitting MDC Carnes Sohshang for the upcoming polls to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

The Chief Minister addressed meetings in Shngimawleiñ, Mawthawpdah, Umdohlun, Mawpat, Mawlangwir, Mawkyrwat, Rangmaw, and Sakwang.

Addressing the people, Sangma said, “This area has been neglected for a long time. We, as a party and government, want to bring in the development that you deserve. For me to be able to work and bring in the development, I need a team, I need people, I need a channel. That is why the upcoming elections are crucial for this village and the constituency.”

He also said there were political parties that try to divide, bring propaganda, and make allegations. “I don’t want to say anything about them because I don’t believe in negative politics. All I want to tell you is that when elections are over and the results are out on February 24, all those political parties which had come to give negative propaganda and lectures will not be here, and we will be back again as a people, as a village, and as a constituency, expecting that we should get our CHC and our road.”

The NPP National President appealed to the people to put development first and vote for the party that can bring it. “The only party that can do that and bring development is no other party but the NPP. That is why this election is crucial,” he said.

Sangma appealed to the people to work together. “This coming election is a chance for us to make a difference in the constituency and the region, and to work closely with the government.”

The Chief Minister said that the NPP government will work together with the people in both good and bad times to ensure that change and development come.

The NPP National President praised Sohshang for his humility. “I urge all of you that the quality of leadership has to be seen. Bah Carnes has got all the qualities of being a good, humble and a capable leader. I feel all of you should support him in every way possible.”

“We need to keep the overall development of the State in mind. In today’s world, so many unnecessary things are said in politics, always in a negative way—blaming each other, speaking badly about one another. I don’t know what kind of politics we are getting into, and I don’t know how we are going to lead and build the State with negative politics. I don’t subscribe to that kind of politics, and I don’t even respond to it. I keep doing my work quietly because that is what I have been elected to do. Why should I reply to negative comments when there is so much work to be done?” the Chief Minister added.

He appealed to the people to put their hearts and minds together, work in a constructive manner, and move forward.
