Conrad slams political parties for hypocritical, opportunistic politics ahead of elections

Must read

Shillong, May 1: National People’s Party (NPP) Chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday called out political parties for their hypocrisy and opportunistic politics. Despite being part of the MDA government, he said these parties take an anti-NPP stance and talk negatively about the party whenever elections come around. He said such practices hurt not only him but they are not healthy for the people of the state.

Campaigning for the party candidate Samlin Malngiang in Sohiong constituency on Monday for the May 10 assembly election, Conrad said, “There are many other political parties, they will come here and give so many speeches against the National People’s Party. They will work with the National People’s Party when it is convenient for them and when the election campaign comes, they will go and speak against the National People’s Party.”

Hitting out at such parties and people, he vehemently said, “I want to tell them in our culture, in the Indian culture as well as in the Khasi culture and in the Garo culture also, we don’t spit on the plate from which we eat. Please remember we don’t!”

He said a leader must carry his people along and fight for them but at the same time must also respect others. “We are good and we are kind and we work together because we believe in working together. It is sad today to see some of these leaders giving this speech today just because election is coming. I have never uttered a single word against these people, but it hurts me today when I hear such language and such divisive politics that people are playing. This is not healthy for our people and for our state,” he said.

It is to be mentioned that election for the Sohiong seat was adjourned just before the February 27 assembly polls following the death of one of the candidates, HDR Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP), a former Home Minister.

At the same time, urging the people to vote for the NPP candidate to bring development and change to Sohiong constituency, he stressed that the only way to bring development to the constituency is to vote for the political party leading the government, which is the NPP. He asked the people not to listen to any other political party and ensure that Sohiong constituency becomes a model constituency.

“You already know that it is the National People’s Party, the NPP, that is leading this government and hence casting your vote for any other candidate, for any other political party will be a loss for you and for the people of Sohiong constituency. Because the only way that we can take Sohiong constituency forward, the only way that we can bring development to Sohiong constituency is to be with the government and to vote for the political party that is leading the government and that is the NPP party. Therefore, in order to bring the change and the development, I urge all of you don’t listen to any other political party coming and giving speech in order to ensure that we are able to make so young constituency a model constituency,” he said.
