Shillong, Nov 26: Constitution Day, or National Law Day is celebrated every-year on November 26 marking the adoption of the Constitution of India.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on November 19, 2015 on the 125th birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate the 26th day of November every year as ‘Constitution Day’ to promote Constitution values among the citizens of the country.
Constitution Day is also known as Samvidhan Divas.
History and Significance of Constitution Day:
After India gained Independence from the British Rule, a committee was formed for drafting the Constitution of India. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedar was made the chairman of the committee. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was also the President of the Constituent Assembly.
In 1948, Dr. Ambedkar completed the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it in the Constituent Assembly.
On November 26, 1949, this draft was adopted with few amendments.
On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution came into effect.
The drafting of the Constitution of India took nearly three years to complete. It must be noted that it is the longest-written national constitution in the world with 448 articles, 12 schedules, and 105 amendments..
The opening statement of the Indian Constitution proclaims India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. It is dedicated to ensuring justice, liberty, equality for all citizens, and fostering fraternity to uphold the unity and integrity of the nation.
