Council polls: UDP claims strong grassroot support will ensure victory

Must read

Shillong, Jan 10: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed confidence that it will perform well in the upcoming elections to the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region due to “strong grassroot support”.

“UDP is growing stronger day by day and the MDC election is more localized, it is not like the last MP election. Because UDP has been there for a long time, the grassroot support is still there and is very strong,” UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said.

“We have 12 MLAs and we have more than 12 MDCs. So because of the connection of our leaders at the constituency level, that is a very positive thing and I feel UDP will be doing very well this time because of the fragmentation of the other parties also,” he added.

Mawthoh informed that the party would soon release its third list of candidates for both KHADC and JHADC polls. So far the party has announced 35 candidates from both the ADCs.

“We will try our best to field candidates from all constituencies,” he said.

In regards to the election manifesto, the general secretary said that the party has had several meetings and orientations with its MLAs and MDCs in Khasi and Jaintia Hills districts on the matter.

He said the party has decided to highlight the achievements of the Titosstarwell Chyne-led EC in the KHADC during its three and a half years tenure.
“So many good things have been done during his tenure. We are highlighting what we have been doing,” Mawthoh stated.

Asked on the recent findings of the CAG reports, the UDP leader said, “Any anomalies whether it is in the party or outside the party in the district council and especially when it comes to the CAG report, we have to look into that. It is not that we should keep quiet and see what is really going on in the district council so that we can think about what needs to be done if we are to think about bringing about corrective measures for the smooth functioning of the district council, because it is a very important institution.”

“So the functioning of the district council is very important and how it has been functioning all of this time, if there are anomalies or things which have been happening even financial irregularities I think that needs to be highlighted, what is wrong in that,” he stated.

Talking about acceptability at the grassroot level, Mawthoh said that the only thing people have against UDP is being part of the government.

“So what’s wrong in being in the government but otherwise they don’t have anything against the UDP what is there. Like I said any wrong doings and anything that is happening, we are ready to point out those things and we have been doing that as we are not keeping quiet. So if other political parties call us opportunists, they can call whatever they like we are not responding to anything. In fact, they should concentrate on their party and on their own work, we should also concentrate on our own work. There is no point at this point of time especially when the elections are just round the corner and then pinpointing all that,” he added.
