GUWAHATI, May 13: A local court in Golaghat dismissed all charges against Christian pastor Pranjal Bhuyan, who was the first individual arrested under the newly enacted Assam Magical Healing (Prevention of Evil Practices) Act, 2024. The court ruled the accusations as entirely unfounded, bringing relief to the pastor and sparking renewed calls for safeguards against the misuse of the law.

Pastor Bhuyan (38), a resident of Padmapur under Dergaon police station, was arrested earlier this year following complaints from local residents. He was accused of using “magical healing” through Christian prayer to influence religious conversions. Assam Police registered a case (Case No. 200/2024) under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 316(2), 318(2), 354, and 299, in addition to Section 6(a) of the Magical Healing Act.

The Act, introduced in 2024, aims to curb exploitative “magical healing” practices and designates such offences as cognizable and non-bailable, punishable with up to three years in prison, a ₹50,000 fine, or both.

After reviewing the evidence, the Golaghat District and Sessions Court found no merit in the allegations and dismissed the case on Tuesday. The judgment was hailed as a victory by the Assam Christian Forum (ACF), which praised the judiciary’s impartiality and thanked Advocate Johnny Bikash for leading the legal defence.

“This judgment brings much-needed relief to Pastor Bhuyan, his family, and the Golaghat Baptist Church,” the ACF said in a statement. “It stands as a testament to the judiciary’s role in upholding constitutional rights and protecting citizens from wrongful accusations.”
The Forum reiterated its faith in Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the freedom to profess, practice, and propagate their religion. While celebrating the outcome, ACF also issued a warning about the broader implications of the case.

“The misuse of legislation—such as in Bhuyan’s case—not only harms individuals but also threatens communal harmony and public trust,” said ACF spokesperson Allen Brooks. “We urge the government to establish safeguards that prevent the wrongful targeting of individuals based on their faith.”

The ACF stressed that while the Assam Magical Healing Act aims to address genuine exploitation, its enforcement must be fair and non-discriminatory. “Bhuyan’s wrongful arrest highlights the urgent need for checks and balances,” the ACF stated.

The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to religious freedom, interfaith dialogue, and the constitutional values of justice, equality, and dignity. It extended gratitude to the legal team, the Golaghat Baptist Church, and the broader Christian community for standing in solidarity with Bhuyan.

“We continue to pray for peace, justice, and unity in Assam and across India,” the statement added.
