Guwahati, Nov 7: A district court in Assam’s Nalbari has ordered police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Varnali Deka, who serves as the district’s deputy commissioner, following accusations of harassment made by a junior officer.
Arpana Sarmah, the circle officer of Nalbari, lodged a complaint alleging that on May 7, while she was handling election duties at Government Gurdon Higher Secondary School in Nalbari, Deka “continuously harassed her” and used abusive language in front of polling personnel, subjecting her to public humiliation.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate P. Goswami, in the order, noted that the police had “failed in its duty” to address Sarmah’s complaint and underscored the need for a formal investigation. “I believe that the police have failed in their duty cast upon them by law. An FIR needs to be filed for the allegations raised by the complainant, and a proper investigation of this case must be conducted as per law,” Goswami stated.
The court directed the Nalbari police station’s officer-in-charge to promptly register a case against Deka, initiate a thorough investigation, and submit a final report without delay.
