Court remands NEC employee accused of sexual assault to 14-day judicial custody

Shillong, Aug 20: The North Eastern Council (NEC) employee arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old coworker was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Shambhu Sharma (58), a cashier at NEC, was arrested on Monday afternoon from his quarter. According to police, a complaint was filed at the Laitumkhrah Police Station.

Following his medical examination, Sharma was produced before the District and Session Judge on Tuesday.

According to sources, the accused had asked the victim to accompany him to a bank in the city for work-related tasks, as she was assigned to assist him. After completing the bank visit, he insisted on stopping by his quarters, claiming he had forgotten his tiffin. Once they arrived, he invited her inside and allegedly forced himself on her.

The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 PM on Monday.

A case has been registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station vide case no. 147/2024 u/s 127(2)/74/64(2)(b) BNS and the accused has been charged with wrongful confinement/assault or use criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty/ rape.
