Shillong, June 2: Meghalaya has recorded 24 deaths in the last 24 hours; make it one of the highest deaths in a day due to the Novel Corona virus in the last one month, at the same time breaching the 600 mark. The last time the state recorded so many deaths was on May 23 where 26 deaths were reported, while May 22 had also seen 24 deaths.
The death cases are a worry for the state as health officials have stressed that their focus is to bring down the mortality rate. On Tuesday, 14 people had lost their lives to COVID-19. The current tally of deaths in the state has also breached the 600 marks, now standing at 616.
Of the 24 cases of fatality, 13 were recorded in East Khasi Hills, 6 in West Jaintia Hills, 2 each in East Jaintia Hills and West Garo Hills and one in Ri-Bhoi district. So far, East Khasi Hills alone has registered a total of 494 deaths, followed by West Jaintia Hills with 44 deaths since the state of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, all is not gloom as the recovery has been good for the state as 711 more persons recovered on Wednesday, taking the total tally of recoveries to 29,578; while there are now 6,403 active cases with the addition of 532 cases on Wednesday. This takes the total number of cases in State so far to 36,597.
The most recoveries took place in East Khasi Hills with 320, followed by Ri Bhoi – 148, South Garo Hills – 65, East Jaintia Hills – 43, West Jaintia Hills- 39, South West Khasi Hills – 27, West Garo Hills – 20, West Khasi Hills – 18, South West Garo Hills – 14, North Garo Hills – 11, and East Garo Hills – 06.
