Agartala, Dec 12: The CPM on Tuesday alleged that a section of people in the name of Hindu-backed organisations are trying to create division centering an ancient structure known to be a mosque at Dimatoli Gram panchayat under Rajnagar block in the south district of Tripura, which they claimed to be a temple.
CPM secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said that a sanghati mela (mela of unity) has been held every year since 1993 in the mosque, where people from all sections participate, and it also continued even after the BJP came to power. But some organisations, which he claimed to be backed by the ruling party, have claimed the structure as Jagannath temple.
It was alleged that minority people were recently not allowed to offer prayers.
“Recently, chief minister Dr. Manik Saha went to the mela, where he was gifted a picture of the ancient mosque claiming to be Jagannath temple. It was an attempt to ignite a divisive fire. Perhaps he (Dr. Manik Saha) didn’t see it then. We want to request that he prevent this attempt by a section of people who are trying to break unity and proshomito,” said Chaudhury.
“I shall also want to say to the police chief that this is a cognizable crime. You can’t prevent the Muslim people from offering prayer there. How did your police in uniform obstruct the Muslim who wanted to offer prayer there? It is very unfortunate,” he said.
After the Janajati Suraksha Mancha (JSM), a local tribal rights body, recently said that they would hold a rally on December 25 demanding the delisting of the tribals who converted to Christianity, the CPM secretary said that they oppose it and demanded the state government cancel the permission to hold the rally.
