Guwahati, May 23: In a crackdown against child marriage, Karimganj police arrested the groom and his father and the kazi during a wedding ceremony at Kabariband village under Patharkandi police station in Assam Karimganj district on Wednesday.
Police rescued a minor girl, dressed as a bride, from the venue. Despite strict government directives against child marriage, both families decided to proceed with the wedding ceremony, which was conducted at night in violation of these orders.
According to police, Bilal Uddin, the groom and son of Zahraul Islam was in a long-term relationship with the minor girl.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Bilal Uddin, Zahraul Islam(the girl’s father), Shabbir Uddin (the Kazi), and several other family members.
A case has been registered against all eight persons under various sections of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) at the Patharkandi police station. All accused have been sent to judicial custody.
It might be mentioned that Assam government has started crackdown against child marriage in 2023. Over 3000 child marriage offenders arrested and over 4500 cases registered so far against these offenders.
