Aizawl, May 29: Cyclone Remal has caused severe destruction across northeastern India, leaving 33 dead. Mizoram suffers heavy losses with 28 fatalities and 10 missing, including 14 deaths from a quarry collapse in Melthum.
The Mizoram government has announced a compensation of ₹4 lakhs for the next of kin of the deceased. Schools in the state will remain closed today as a precautionary measure.
Heavy rains continue to batter the region, prompting weather alerts in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Flash floods have struck Imphal, while Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura face widespread power and internet outages. In Assam, four people have died and several others were injured, whereas in Meghalaya only one death has been reported until now.
The severe weather and landslides have disrupted connectivity across the northeast. In Nagaland, two individuals have drowned in the Doyang Dam reservoir. Meghalaya is also experiencing extremely heavy rains in the Khasi Hills region, with over 200 houses damaged in the Garo Hills due to the cyclonic storm.
