Shillong, May 26: Meghalaya and other Northeastern states are expected to get respite from the scorching heat later today. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy downpours in the entire region for at least the next three days, starting today.
The Guwahati regional office of IMD has sounded Orange Alert for Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram for May 26, i.e., today. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected during this period, with gusty winds with wind speeds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph. Arunachal Pradesh is kept in the Yellow Alert category on May 26.
Meanwhile, IMD has also announced a Red Alert for Meghalaya, Assam. Tripura and Mizoram for tomorrow, i.e., May 27. Extremely heavy rains with wind speeds upto 60kmph are predicted. Again, for May 28, the Orange Alert is sounded for all seven Northeastern states, including Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the National Bulletin regarding the Severe Cyclone Remal which is heading towards West Bengal Coast, stated, “The Cyclonic Storm “Remal” (pronounced as “Re-Mal”) over North Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards, with a speed of 06 kmph during past 06 hours, intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST of today, the May 26, 2024 over North Bay of Bengal near latitude 19.5°N and longitude 89.3°E about 290 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 330 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh), 270 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal), 390 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal) and 310 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal).
It further stated that “Remal” is very likely to continue to move nearly northwards, intensify further, and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, close to southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh), by midnight of today, May 26 2024 as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph.”
