Aizawl, May 28: In the wake of Cyclone Remal’s impact, a stone quarry in outskirts of Mizoram collapsed this morning due to the severe weather conditions. At least ten bodies have been recovered from a stone quarry site. Two individuals were injured and rescued from the site.
In response to the cyclone the State Government has ordered the closure of all government offices today, with exceptions for essential services such as Disaster Management, Health and Family Welfare, and Police. Secretaries and department heads have been instructed to ensure that their staff work from home and remain available for any emergencies.
The private sector is also advised to adopt a work-from-home approach wherever possible, following the warning from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
All schools across Mizoram have been ordered to shut down immediately. Numerous landslides have caused road blockades throughout the state. A landslide at the ITI and Salem localities border has prompted a search for bodies in the affected area.
Aizawl is experiencing severe traffic disruptions, with nine reported road blockages within the city.
The duty post at District Jail in the Armed Veng locality has collapsed, narrowly missing the sentry on duty who captured the incident on video.
Rescue operations continue as another girl was saved from the Hlimen area near the quarry collapse site. Additionally, three houses have collapsed in this locality.
The state government urges all residents to stay safe and follow official advisories as emergency response teams work tirelessly to manage the crisis.
