Tura, Oct 28: Villagers of Dobu in East Garo Hills successfully prevented a major robbery from taking place after they alerted the nearest police camp about an ongonig robbery of the Nengpatchi Forest Gate in the area late Wednesday night.
Based on the intelligence inputs by the villagers, police teams from Dobu and Rongjeng station rushed to the site and on seeing the security forces the gang started to flee from the spot. A hot chase took place with the dacoits fleeing on motorcycles.
One of the gang members tried to flee towards Dobu on his motorbike and even broke through a police cordon but he lost control of the two wheeler and skidded off the road. Villagers gave chase and caught up with him at a nearby jungle. He was brought out by police from the shrubs shaken but unhurt.
The criminal has been arrested and identified as one Roby R Marak of Williamnagar.
“This is the same group which was involved in the snatching of valuables from travelers at Nengpatchi on Tuesday midnight. A search is on to arrest the rest of the gang,” said East Garo Hills SP Bruno A Sangma.
