Shillong, Jan 27: Mawlai Football Club secured a berth at their first-ever Meghalaya State League (MSL) final after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ladthadlaboh in the semifinal clash at SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo, on Monday evening.
The decisive goal came in the 29th minute from Damanbhalang Chyne, whose strike ensured Mawlai’s progression to the final. Despite valiant efforts by Ladthadlaboh, including notable plays by their captain and goalkeeper Ialamlang Biam, the team could not find an equalizer.
Mawlai, who were eliminated in the 2023 semifinals, will now face the winners of the second semifinal between Rymbai Shkenshynriah and Shillong Lajong. The match is scheduled for Tuesday at the Wahiajer Multipurpose Sports Complex, with kick-off at 1:30 PM.
The semifinal was played under floodlights, drawing passionate supporters from both teams. Ladthadlaboh fans travelled from West Jaintia Hills to cheer for their team, making their first MSL semifinal appearance.
Ladthadlaboh’s Buromlangki Salahe had the game’s first attempt on target, but Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare expertly punched the shot away. Mawlai’s attacking strategy centered on feeding the ball to their striker Donlad Diengdoh. The breakthrough came when a long ball put Donlad through the defensive line. A miscommunication between Ladthadlaboh’s defense and goalkeeper allowed Chyne to capitalize, calmly slotting the ball into an open net.
Despite their determination, Ladthadlaboh could not penetrate Mawlai’s solid defense. Mawlai also had several chances to extend their lead but failed to convert. A sudden downpour heightened the intensity and excitement, with fans anxiously watching until the final whistle.
At the end of the match, Ladthadlaboh captain Ialamlang Biam was visibly emotional, possibly blaming himself for the mistake that led to the goal. However, he delivered a commendable performance, including a standout save in the second half to deny Donlad.
The spotlight now shifts to Wahiajer, where Rymbai Shkenshynriah will aim to upset 2019 champions Shillong Lajong in the second semifinal. The MSL, organized by the Meghalaya Football Association and supported by the Government of Meghalaya, has consistently delivered thrilling knockout games, and fans can expect another exciting encounter on Tuesday.
